Job Description

The Position The Digital Forensics Specialist is responsible for identifying, preserving, analyzing, and presenting digital evidence from computers, mobile devices, networks, cloud platforms, and video and surveillance systems to support investigations involving legal cases or criminal activity. This role requires deep technical expertise in forensic tools and methodologies, a keen understanding of legal standards, and the ability to prepare detailed documentation and expert testimony. Background Appraisal Interview: Completion and review of a detailed Personal History Statement. Candidates meeting basic criteria will undergo a background investigation. Comprehensive Background Investigation: Includes a detailed personal history review and a lie detection polygraph screening. Captains' Interview: Personal interviews with the Captain of Field Operations and the Captain of Support Operations. Final Steps: Psychological and medical evaluations prior to hire. The Chief of Police makes the final appointment decision. The position is probationary for one year. Job Responsibilities The Digital Forensics Specialist advises the unit supervisor in planning, coordinating, and directing digital forensic activities. Responsibilities include: Inventorying, examining, and performing complex technical analyses of digital media such as hard drives, cell phones, optical disks, memory cards, and other electronic storage media. Locating, examining, and collecting digital evidence from external cloud servers. Preparing written findings, displays, or graphic representations for court; testifying and interpreting findings as an expert witness. Researching new methods and procedures in scientific criminal investigation and incorporating relevant developments. Collaborating with law enforcement agencies to coordinate findings and explore analysis methods. Participating in law enforcement working groups and training initiatives. Processing crime scenes for video and physical evidence and reconstructing events. Performing other related duties as assigned. Required Skills and Knowledge Ability to: Troubleshoot and optimize computer and network systems. Disassemble suspect computers. Analyze data on computers involved in investigations. Gather and preserve evidence. Work effectively as part of a team. Operate forensic laboratory equipment and software. Provide technical support and training. Follow instructions and maintain records. Write reports and testify in court. Knowledge of: Principles and practices of computer systems criminal investigation. Evidence collection and analysis. Computer hardware, software, and networks. Specialized forensic software. Legal standards and applicable laws such as California Penal Code, Evidence Code, and others. Qualifications Equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required abilities is acceptable. Typically, this includes: An Associate’s degree in criminal justice, forensic science, or a related field. At least two years of experience in criminal investigation and/or computer and network hardware and software. Licenses and Certifications Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license and passing an extensive background check are required.
